"It was a pleasure to work with the team from Go Well consulting on the Sustainability Strategy to support Tū Ora towards its sustainability goals. Tū Ora is a unique and complex organisation, with various moving parts making executing this strategy a challenge. Go Well took the time to work with us, our board, sub-committees and partners to understand our business and how we operate and think outside the box for solutions and suggestions in line with the goals set out by our Executive Leadership Team. We look forward to implementing the strategy across our organisation and to seeing the impact it has on improving sustainability.”
– MABLI JONES, DEPUTY CEO, TŪ ORA
Tū Ora Compass Health is a primary care network and non-profit social enterprise, which provides quality health care services across Wellington, Porirua, Wairarapa and Kāpiti. Tū Ora employs around 250 staff across three sites of operation and contracts with 60 medical practices. Tū Ora and its contracted providers serve an enrolled population of 331,000 and, each year, deliver over one and a half million consults, administer over 200,000 immunisations, and arrange almost 10,000 funded visits for people requiring mental health support (to name just a few of their services).
Tū Ora reached out to us in early 2023, after developing a sustainability strategy was identified as a strategic priority in their annual plan. Through discussions around their unique context and needs, it was agreed that we would take them through our strategy development process, including stakeholder engagement. In May we kicked off the research phase, deep-diving into their history, culture, and operations to better understand their organisation, before commencing their stakeholder engagement. Over a period of a few months, we connected with their executive leadership team, staff, general practitioners & practices, Pacific Health Committee, and external stakeholders (such as their service providers and landlords/property managers) to better understand what Tū Ora was doing well in the sustainability space, what they thought the organisation should be focussing on, where they thought the risks and opportunities lay, and the kinds of initiatives/improvements they’d like to see. We presented Tū Ora with a detailed stakeholder engagement report and used the findings, along with our understanding of their organisation, to begin drafting their strategy.
There were several key considerations for us when developing Tū Ora’s strategy: their commitment to providing equitable healthcare, uplifting Māori and Pasifika culture, taking care of their staff, and their broad sphere of influence. We reviewed the draft strategy with Tū Ora over multiple sessions to ensure that the strategy paid proper heed to those considerations, as well as offering the right balance of ambition and achievability for the organisation. We ultimately settled on seven impact areas and 83 targets.
We really enjoyed working with Tū Ora and getting a better understanding of their unique organisational structure. It was exciting to work with an organisation that not only does such important mahi in their community, but who is also a leader in staff health and wellbeing practices – Tū Ora won the Team Gold award at the 2023 Wellington Gold Awards, which acknowledges the best wellness and HR practices in workplaces for their people. We knew that their kaupapa, existing practices, and large sphere of influence made them perfectly placed to be leaders in sustainability in their field, and we think their strategy reflects that. We’re excited to follow the implementation of their strategy over the coming months…
We’re here to evolve business for the sustainable future.
