Havana Coffee Works is one of Aotearoa’s most iconic and enduring specialty coffee roasters. Founded on Wellington’s Cuba Street in 1989Havana has been roasting coffee for over 35 years, with their roastery in Wellington and supplying coffee nationally through wholesale, retail, and direct-to-consumer channels, including a subscription service and an online store stocking everything from single-origin beans to commercial espresso machines.

Sustainability has been an important consideration for Havana since their inception, and they had already taken significant steps towards reducing their impacts before approaching us, such as the S70 Peregrine roaster they installed in 2017, which produces 70% less emissions and uses 70% less energy than conventional drum roasters. While Havana had long been engaged in sustainability, they recognised the value of taking a more structured, stakeholder-informed approach, and in early 2025 they engaged us to support them in developing a sustainability strategy.

To help develop their strategy, we took Havana through a comprehensive stakeholder engagement process, which spanned six key groups: owners, staff, consumers, customers, suppliers, and retailers. Hearing from voices across their full value chain gave Havana an honest picture of where they stood, what was expected of them, and where they could lead. We used these insights to help Havana identify their material impacts, which formed the foundation of their strategy: a coherent, actionable framework that honoured their existing commitments and set a direction for the future.

We really enjoyed working with such an iconic brand, especially one so committed to listening to their stakeholders.
